A park ground with a long memory: why India A's Christchurch match mattered
Hagley Oval does not look like a place that frightens Test teams. It sits inside a public park in central Christchurch, with a grass bank where most grounds have stands, and on a sunny day it feels closer to a club match than an international venue. India's senior side have played one Test there, in early 2020, and they remember it well. It went badly. They made 242 and 124 and lost by seven wickets inside three days, with Kyle Jamieson taking 5 for 45 in the first innings.
That history is why the second unofficial Test between New Zealand A and India A, which began at Hagley on Saturday 31 October 2026, drew more attention than its label suggests. The senior team's second Test of the tour is at the same ground from 27 November.
The hours for Indian fans
Play started at 11:00 AM local time, which is 3:30 AM IST, across four days. Using the session pattern from the first match in Lincoln, lunch would fall around 5:30 AM IST and stumps around 10:30 AM. For most fans in India, the final session in New Zealand was the morning chai session at home. Early alarms, then.
A squad full of Test names
Eight players in India A's group for Christchurch were also in the Test squad: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Anshul Kamboj, Akash Deep, Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar. Padikkal had done the most for his case, with 199 in Lincoln and 231 runs across two innings. Jaiswal had made 17 and 5 and needed time at the crease. Pant was on the list subject to fitness after a side strain. His name meant little until the toss.
New Zealand A, led by Rhys Mariu, had their own concern in Simon Keene. He took 5 for 24 on the first morning in Lincoln and finished that match batting with a hamstring problem.
What the ground asks of batters
Hagley has a reputation for helping seamers on the first day and flattening out afterwards, which is why captains who win the toss often bowl. The Christchurch nor'wester can dry the surface and speed up the outfield, while a southerly change brings cloud and swing within the hour. Lincoln had already shown how brutal the first hour could be: India A were bowled out for 113 on the opening morning before recovering to 516 in the second innings.
The squads, the session times and the players with the most to prove are set out in the Hagley Oval A-match preview that names India A's Test hopefuls. For anyone planning early alarms for the Test in late November, it is a useful first look at the ground.
